Chapter 1

Spring Break vacations to exotic places are for college kids and teenagers, not divorced men who will be thirty in a few months. Leonard can’t really believe that he has to deal with this shit at his age. This isn’t his scene, at all, and he doesn’t know why he agreed to come to this silly little Mexican town with a name he can’t even spell, much less pronounce. No, that isn’t true. He knows all too well why he’s here. Jim had asked, pulling out the pout and puppy dog eyes in a one-two punch that Leonard couldn’t resist, and now he’s stuck sitting on this sandy beach watching barely clad teenagers ogle his best friend.

Working double shifts in the ER would be more enjoyable than this. He should have built up a resistance to Jim Kirk by now. They’ve been friends for two years now, and he still can’t say no whenever Jim pulls out the pout and sad looking eyes. Even when he knows that it’ll lead to a week of sun, sand, and sex, the latter of which won’t involve him unless he decides to do the whole casual sex with a stranger thing. That’s not really his scene, either. He tried, especially those first months after arriving in San Francisco and finding out that a lot of civilians found a man in uniform really hot. The physical release was good, but it got old fast, and he never really could get past how empty he felt after.

The feeling of water splashing against his back makes him frown and glare at the wet blond squishing his toes in the sand beside him. “Bones, this is a vacation. You’re not supposed to sit and sulk and glare at the ocean.”

“I was glaring at you, asshole,” he points out. “I’m not sulking, either. I was actually thinking about sex.”

Jim blinks and practically gapes at him. “What about sex?” He clears his throat, scowling when Leonard snorts at him.

“Just about sex,” he says, shrugging a shoulder. He’s slightly amused at Jim’s obvious surprise, but also annoyed that he considers it so shocking. Hell, it isn’t like Leonard’s celibate, even if he hasn’t gotten laid in a while because he’s been busy with school and work at the clinic.

“Is it--“ Jim trails off and continues to scowl as he scans the beach. “Did you see someone that you wanted to fuck?”

Leonard looks Jim over, admiring his toned legs and muscular chest, lingering on his handsome profile before he looks back at the water. “Yeah,” he says honestly, digging his fingers into the sand.

“Oh.” Jim flops down on the sand next to him, raking his fingers through his wet hair. “Well, that’s just…great.”

“Real great.” Leonard smiles wryly and shakes his head. “What about you? I saw you flirting with enough people to keep you busy all week.”

“It’s just flirting. You know I’m pickier than that,” Jim says, sounding annoyed. “Don’t tell me that you’re starting to believe everything they say back at the academy.”

“Damn it, Jim. Of course I’m not,” he mutters. He glances at Jim and wonders what’s going on in his head right now. “However, it’s Spring Break, and I believe some of your selling points, pre-pouting, were sun and sex.”

“I didn’t pout.” Jim rolls his eyes and looks at him. “I knew that you needed a break from work and school, like I did, so I was just really persuasive. We’ve both been working too hard this school year.”

Leonard can’t really deny that, not when they’re doubling up on classes and dealing with jobs and clubs, too. There are some nights in recent weeks when he’s lucky if he gets three hours of sleep. Still. “I don’t see why you’d think I’d find this sort of thing relaxing,” he grumbles. It would have been better if they’d just gone camping or taken a road trip like they usually did during breaks.

Jim laughs. “Bones, it’s the beach. It’s perfect weather for swimming or lying around enjoying the sun. There are alcoholic drinks in a variety of fun colors. We don’t have to wear anything but a pair of shorts for a week. And we can see the stars at night. What more do you want?” Before Leonard can answer, Jim says, “Lie down. You’re going to get sunburned if you don’t put some lotion on.”

“I don’t burn,” he says. He shifts and reaches for the bottle of lotion anyway. Jim takes it from him and smiles when Leonard arches a brow at him.

“Lie down.” Jim flips the lid of the lotion and keeps staring at Leonard. “I’m not going to have our week ruined because you get burned our first day here, Bones. You’re grumpy enough without a sunburn.”

“I can do it myself.” He narrows his eyes slightly and licks his lips when Jim keeps staring. “Stubborn ass,” he mutters finally, flopping over to lie on his belly. The sand is warm, sticking to his sweaty skin already. He grimaces and reaches for one of the towels that Jim brought from their hotel room.

“You can be so damn prissy sometimes,” Jim murmurs. Leonard glares over his shoulder but ends up smiling slightly when he sees the grin on Jim’s face. “Comfortable?”

“As well as I can be on grainy sand in this heat,” he says. He lies on the towel and rests his chin on his hands.

“You need to stop worrying so much, Bones.” Jim begins to rub lotion on his shoulders, which makes it difficult to think. His hands are rough and callused, and this has to be the stupidest thing Leonard’s done because Jim isn’t just casually applying the lotion. He’s massaging, teasing and tempting with every movement of his fingers. “You need to just relax and enjoy life before it passes you by and all you have left is regrets.”

“Is the sun making you all philosophical and shit or did you already stop by the bar?” He frowns at a bunch of kids who can’t be more than eighteen tossing around a ball nearby.

“It’s not even noon yet, so no drinking. I’m just always this wise. You just usually ignore me,” Jim says, sounding too amused and affectionate considering their current position. He shifts, straddling Leonard’s legs and leaning closer. His voice is low and husky as he presses his mouth against Leonard’s ear. “Whoever it is you saw earlier, do you think they could make you feel as good as I do? Do you think they’d ever want you as much as I do?”

“Jim--what is this?” he asks quietly. He doesn’t like to think that Jim would joke about this, but there’s always been that line that they won’t cross. Hell, he knows the attraction is mutual, enough that he doesn’t feel like some pathetic bastard jerking off over thoughts of his best friend, yet neither of them have ever tried anything. He doesn’t want a relationship right now anymore than Jim does, but he isn’t sure that he can handle something casually steady, even if it’s with Jim. Besides, sex changes everything, for better or worse.

“I’m trying to seduce you, old man,” Jim admits. “I must not be doing a good job at it, though, because you’re still resisting me.”

“So, what? Your plan is sun, seduction, and sex?” Leonard feels Jim’s touch become even more teasing, soft caresses and slow stroking of his back and shoulders.

“Yeah, that’s basically it,” he says. “I know you want me, too, and we’d be good together. Damn, we’d be great together, considering I’m already hard just from rubbing lotion on you. It wouldn’t be anything serious, not yet, but what’s wrong with making our friendship even better?”

Leonard rolls over partially, supporting his weight on his elbow as he stares at Jim. The vulnerability he sees on his face is what makes him realize that Jim really means this. “The person I found was you, Jim.” He watches Jim’s face as he realizes what Leonard is really saying, and he decides that maybe this is the smartest thing he’s ever done, after all. He reaches up and pulls Jim’s head down, ghosting his lips over Jim’s mouth. “There’s nothing wrong with making it even better,” he says before he kisses Jim.
