Unanticipated Future

Reckoning

"Red, get to the library pronto"

"Sure thing."

Willow hung the phone up and looked at Spike. He was walking in from the shower. His body nude with a towel around his hair.

She started to laugh. "Only you would use the towel to wrap around your head. What if someone came in?"

"Well, luv. I'd say if they barged into our room, they'd deserve a show before I killed them. What would you say?"

She groaned. "Arrogant vampire. That was Thack. He says we need to get to the library pronto. I'll get Dru while you get dressed. You are getting dressed?"

"If you'd rather bail me out of jail, I can go out like this. Of course, you might have to fight the women off of me."

"Sure thing....get dressed deadboy. You're ass is mine. No one else needs to be looking. I'll meet you at Dru's in ten minutes."

Spike, Willow and Dru rushed into the library. Willow was surprised to see the usual gang plus Darla sitting at the table with books in front of them.

"What's the 911?" She asked Thack, taking her coat off.

"Wait. How'd they get here?" Xander demanded looking at Spike and Dru.

"What?" She asked puzzled.

"The sun? Last time I checked, sunlight plus vampires equals poof."

She looked at Spike, her eyes wide. "OH...that....the sewers....yeah, the sewers. They took the sewers. Sounds good. So, if the examination is over, what is the emergency?"

"The WDD knows the council has sent its best. He will be expecting your attack. We are here trying to decide the best way to go about this."

Willow turned on her serious mode and sat down. She looked at the file provided and started to think.

Dru and Spike looked at each other, still uncomfortable around the humans.

"The sewers?" Xander repeated.

Buffy looked at them closely. "Doesn't make sense." She whispered to him and Cordelia. "Dru is wearing white. If she'd run through the sewers from across town, I can promise you that she wouldn't be that clean. I've been there before. Not going to happen."

"Yeah....and they got here awfully fast to have had to run. Willow would have been breathing hard at least. I'm with you on this one Buffy. Something is going on." Cordelia said.

Xander nodded in agreement. "Yeah...but what? I mean, the sunlight remember? Maybe they are just very fit and made it here fast. I don't know what else it could be."

"I'll check with Giles later. See what he thinks." Buffy said.

Spike noticed the three bent heads and the looks in their directions. (Bloody hell, the damn chits must have gotten smarter as they aged. Just what we need...more explanations....Why the hell did I let Red talk me into coming here? Yeah, right Spike...like you would have had a choice...if Red wanted you to jump off a bridge, you'd gladly do it...you're whipped. Oh well, there could be worse things....)

Willow, Spike and Dru went into the stacks. They needed to get away from the curious stares.

"I fucked up." Willow said. "I can't believe I forgot it was daytime."

"Not your fault luv. Who would have thought the moron would be the one to notice?"

"I know. I can't believe he's gotten smarter since I left. Must be because he had to do his own homework."

"Well, I think it was a good save. They can't prove we didn't come by the sewers. So far, it is still secret." Dru said, smiling.

"I know....I still feel kind of bad not telling them. I just know that it will get messy. They have surprisingly taken to you two better than I thought. I hate to mess that up."

"Well, we only have three more days before the slayer gets married. I think we can make it through that long." Spike said, kissing her head. "Nothing else could possibly go wrong."

"What was that?" Willow asked suddenly.

A loud crash was heard by all three. Quietly, they got up and looked into the library. Willow groaned as she took in what was happening.

"What was that you were saying?" She asked Spike, glaring at him. Dru tried to hide a smile.

The library was overrun with vampires. Willow counted at least twelve. She saw that they had Darla, Cordelia, and Giles in their grips. She watched as Buffy, Xander, Thack and Angel tried to fight off the rest.

"When did Angel get here?" She asked. "Oh well, I knew it couldn't be quiet for too long."

"It will be ok. OW...did you see that hit? That had to hurt." Dru said, her eyes watching the fighting with pleasure. "Oh..neat...I've never seen that done before...."

Spike started to chuckle when he saw two vampires advance on his sire. "Uh oh, looks like Peaches is getting ganged up on. Poor baby."

Willow made a decision. She couldn't stand by and watch her friends hurt. Especially not by these idiots. They couldn't even fight. Buffy and the others must have gotten lazy. Used to, they would have been dust. Now, her friends looked like they were barely keeping up with their enemies. She looked at Spike and Dru.

"Y'all ready to kick some vamp ass?"

They both grinned and nodded. It was time to have some fun.

Willow, Spike, and Dru moved with practiced ease. Willow went to help the three caught friends. Soon, she had dispatched of the vampires and had moved to help Xander. Dru went to help Angel. She took her time, enjoying his suffering. Finally, she decided that Spike was a bad influence and quickly staked his two opponents. He looked at her in surprise when she helped him sit. Her eyes were clear and a bit amused. He smiled shyly as he accepted her help. Spike went to help the slayer. She had four vampires that she was fighting off. With deadly speed, he quickly dusted two of them. That left the odds even.

Willow and Dru sat on the table between the others and watched Spike fighting. He was so graceful. Willow chewed her bottom lip as he was punched painfully. Dru saw Buffy knocked out of the way. Both vampires concentrated on Spike. One of them threw his direct opponent a sword that had been near the book cage. Willow's eyes grew wide. Uh oh...this didn't look good.

Spike saw the sword enter his chest, right through his heart. He heard gasps behind him and had to smile. He stumbled a bit and started moaning and groaning. He heard Willow and Dru start laughing. Suddenly, he straightened and looked at Willow.

"You know, luv. Even after six years, I still get all tingly inside when this happens. Do you think thats normal?"

She smiled at him and got off the table. "Well, are we normal? I think that is the first question you have to ask yourself. I, personally, don't feel tingly. I feel a bit of sharp pain and then nothing." She reached for the handle of the sword and quickly pulled it out of him.

"Raven, what about you?"

"No tingles for me. I go with Red on this one. A bit of pain like a shot and then it goes away. Guess you aren't normal Scarlet."

He growled at her use of the latter part of his name. "Will....how hard a name is that to remember?"

Willow held the sword and rolled her eyes. Quickly, she turned and pierced both the remaining vampires. "Dust to dust." she said before turning back to Spike. "That was fun. What's next?"

"You're incorrigible." He said, kissing her firmly.

"Get a room" Dru yelled good naturedly.

They heard a thump and looked over to see Buffy laying on the floor. She had just fainted.

"This so doesn't look good." Willow muttered to Spike.

"We'll make it pet. We saved them. They have to listen."

Three hours later

"I can't believe you failed to mention this Willow." Buffy said.

"What can I say? I forgot."

"You forgot that you and the deadones can't be killed, by anything? As if" Xander said.

"What can I say? It slips my mind from time to time." Willow said defensively.

"I must say, this is fascinating. No wonder the council uses your services. Things make much more sense now." Giles said, smiling.

"I've only died about a dozen times" Willow said, defending her position as the council's best. "So, the rest were just poor little human Willow. Now, Spike. He's bought it....what?" She asked Dru.

"About fifty six times. Just a guess though."

"What can I say?" he smiled, "I laugh in the face of danger. Ha...ha....besides, if you got it, flaunt it."

"Sure thing, blondie" Dru said, rolling her eyes at Willow.

Willow just laughed. "Well, after that little attack, I doubt that this demon will be all that great....When is he going to be here?"

"Sometime tomorrow. We'll keep our eyes open. You three better get some rest. I'll see you in the morning. We'll finish this research up."

"OK.." Willow said. She said goodbye to her old friends who were still sitting in shock. "See you all tomorrow."

Her, Spike and Dru left the library together.

* * * * *

"That was it?" Buffy said, disappointed.

"I warned you. These dumb things are so full of themselves.....never takes more than a few minutes."

The gang was seated back in the library. Earlier that day, they had witnessed the demise of the latest WDD, thanks to Willow and Dru's handy work and Spike's big mouth.

"Well, I always knew Spike's mouth would come in handy for something" Angel said, smiling at his childe.

"Did Angel just smile?" Cordelia demanded.

"Yes." Xander said, in mock shock. "Alert the press. Hell just froze over."

"Asshole" Angel muttered.

"Sorry, Angel. It just so rarely happens that I guess we got carried away" Buffy said, smiling at her ex. "Wait, has it ever happened?"

"Buff, leave him alone." Willow said, smiling.

Things had settled back down into a familiar pattern. She liked this easy camaraderie they all had. The wedding was the next morning. Immediately afterward, she and her new family were leaving. They had to get back to Toronto. She looked at Dru and Spike and smiled. They had forgotten their doubts about fitting in. Now, Dru had been shopping with Cordelia twice and Spike had even met his sire for a drink. The two were trying to clear the air of past disagreements. Willow suddenly realized that she had been incredibly rude.

"Angel....could I talk to you?" Willow asked quietly.

"Of course." He looked surprised.

She had barely looked at him since she had been back. He followed her into the stacks, eager to see what she had to say.

"I am a terrible person. I can't believe I've treated you so badly." She said. "I know that I've treated you like you've had the plague this last week and a half. Its a long story...."

"The dream...about Dru's past?" He asked.

"Yeah..."

"Spike told me. I asked him why you were avoiding me. I mean, we were never very close, but you used to smile at me. Now, you rarely even look at me. I knew something was wrong."

"I'm sorry. I know it was Angelus and not you. I saw Dru helping you that night. I knew that if she could forgive what you had done, I could."

"She doesn't remember. You do. There is a difference. I was a bastard. I don't blame you for hating me."

"I've never hated you, Angel. Now, Angelus....well, we won't go there. Can you forgive me?"

"I think I can manage." He said, smiling again.

"Uh oh...that's twice. What would Xander say?"

"Who cares?"

"Good point." She hugged him and they both went back to the others.

NEXT DAY

"So, you're leaving?"

"Yes Buffy. We have to get back to work."

"You better not stay away another seven years. You hear me?" She said, tears in her eyes.

"Nah....Besides, you could track us down now." Willow said smiling. She hugged her friend. "You look beautiful. The wedding was great. Mark is great. I know you both will be happy."

"Thanks. I hope so."

"I know so." The two women joined the party.

"So, y'all are driving back?" Xander asked, munching on wedding cake.

"Yes. Oh, and Thack....Spike is driving."

Thackery made a face. "Well, I thought I might live to see Toronto."

The others laughed. Spike scowled. "I do not drive badly."

"Uh huh." Dru and Thack said in unison.

"Red. Can we see the Grand Canyon on the way back?"

"Dru, love. Think. Arizona....Toronto... Arizona...Toronto. What do you think?" Willow smiled.

"I know it would require a slight detour, but I'd love to see it. Please...."

Spike suddenly laughed. "Hey Red. You and Dru could re-enact the whole Thelma and Louise thing. You know you wouldn't die. It would just be like major bungee jumping."

"Yeah but we'd need Brad Pitt. I mean, I for one am not remaking it without his cute ass."

"You can have mine."

"No contest lover. I'd need Brad."

"You little hussy. C'mere and I'll show you a cute ass." He started after her.

Dru shook her head. "Don't they make you sick?"

The others just smiled, knowing they would miss the three when they left. Buffy was very glad that she had mailed that invitation off. If she hadn't, she never would have made such three good friends.

Dru saw their smiles. "You just don't understand how sticky sweet they are. I mean it. It's like watching the Romance channel 24 hours a day and not being able to change the channel."

Thack looked at her. "And you'd hate it if the channel ever changed. Admit it, Raven."

She smiled knowingly. "Yeah, I would." She looked at Spike and Willow kissing in the corner. Their lives were good. Her life was good. And she couldn't wait to see the Grand Canyon.
