Unanticipated Future

Letting Go

Willow took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. They had found Drusilla. Spike would be leaving her now. She would be alone again. She felt like someone had stabbed her through her heart. The pain was great. She was going to lose him before she ever had him. She calmed herself. She would go on with her life. He would be happy. If he was happy, that was all she could ask for. She started to go to the phone.

Spike saw Willow reach for the phone. "NO!" he yelled sharply.

She turned to him, a bit frightened. "What?"

Spike walked slowly to her. "Don't call. I don't care. Let it go."

"You love her. You've been waiting for this news for over three months. Let me call."

Spike shook his head. "I don't love her." he said quietly. "I realized that shortly after she left. I needed her, I wanted to possess her, but I no longer felt love for her. Not like it was in the beginning. It grew to be more of a tolerance than anything. Don't get me wrong. I still care for her and hope she is well. She was part of my life for a century. You can't just get over that in a few months. But, I don't want to know where she is. I plan to leave her alone."

Willow looked at him. "You came here to find her. Hell, what have I been doing since March?"

"Red, I wanted to make her pay for leaving me. It was a typical reaction. She hurt me, I had to hurt her. I know now that that is just stupid. She got on with her life. I got on with mine."

Willow felt anger enter her voice. "And when exactly did you come to this conclusion? Was it when you insisted on living here so I could search? Was it when I neglected my other duties trying to find any sign of her? Was it..."

Spike put his finger over her mouth, stopping her words. "It was on April 12th. That's when I realized that I was in love with you."
