Chapter 1
Fred watched the handsome man walk to the window, his long fingers moving along the windowpane, tracing where the drops of rain were clinging to the glass. The brunette sat up, letting the sheet fall from her naked body as she asked, “Lindsey, are you okay?”
Lindsey turned his head and saw that he had awakened his lover. An apologetic smile crossed his lips as he said, “I didn’t mean to wake you, darlin’.”
“It’s okay,” Fred smiled softly, her eyes moving over the contours of his nude body, a slight blush crossing her cheeks when she noticed the scratches on his back and the bite mark on his left butt cheek, remembering all too well how those had gotten there. Her eyes looked into his as she confessed, “I always wake up when you’re not beside me.”
“I heard it storming,” he explained softly, “I like the rain.”
“Me too,” she got out of bed, her slim figure bare as she moved to him, her arms going around his waist as she kissed his shoulder. She loved that he was her height, just a little taller than her, fitting perfectly against her body. She could see the emotions in his lovely blue eyes, knew there was more to it than he had said, not pressing him because she knew he’d talk to her when he was ready.
She had met Lindsey McDonald when he’d arrived at the Hyperion ten months before, back in LA after a year of travel and discovering himself, determined to join the AI team even if Angel didn’t trust him or want him there. He had been the most beautiful thing she’d ever seen, thick brown hair that was just a little too long, a little too wild, beautiful eyes that were the color of the Texas sky during Spring, and he’d seemed so broken, like a fallen angel who was struggling for salvation.
She had been infatuated immediately, blushing like a silly schoolgirl whenever he spoke to her in that husky Texas drawl that felt like home and watching him every chance she had. It had taken him six weeks to begin to flirting with her, having proven he could be trusted and settling into life as one of their team. She’d been flustered at his attention, not accustomed to having such a man flirt with her. They had begun dating and, a month later, they had made love. Since that evening, he had moved his belongings into her room and they had been together ever since. She loved him more than she’d ever imagine loving anyone, knowing he felt the same way about her.
“It’s the rain that reminds me…the first time I realized I was in love with you,” Lindsey told her quietly, his eyes staring out the window. Talking about his emotions was near the bottom of his list of pleasurable activities, but, with Fred, things were different. He felt as if he could tell the shy genius anything, had the urge to tell her everything.
“Really?” she asked softly, her lips curving into a loving smile.
“Yes, really,” he turned his head and looked at her, a crooked smile crossing his face when he saw the curious look in her eyes, knowing she was dying to ask him to explain but wouldn’t because she didn’t like to pry. Another reason he loved her. He brushed his lips against hers, a tender kiss, whispering against her lips when it ended, “It was storming. We’d gone after the Drylity demon at that warehouse in Long Beach, remember? I was tired and annoyed that he was stronger than Wesley’s books had said and sore from the fight and then I saw you, standing there in the rain looking beautiful and smiling happily because we’d succeeded, and I suddenly felt relaxed and happy, just from looking at you and seeing your smile. That's when I knew.”
“That’s the night you asked me for coffee,” Fred recalled, eyes widening as she whispered, “That was our first date.”
“Yes, it was,” Lindsey smiled, “Bet you had no idea that asking you for coffee meant that I was hopelessly in love with you and wanted you with me forever, did you?”
“No idea,” Fred smiled, “but I still would have said yes. I knew I loved you from the moment you walked into the lobby of the hotel and our eyes met. I was just waiting for you to realize we belonged together.”
“You always are the smart one,” Lindsey grinned at his lover.
“And you’re the sexy one,” she flirted shyly, still not very comfortable with flirting and vocalizing her desire and need, but getting better with every passing day.
“I don’t know about that,” Lindsey turned to face her, his hand moving along the elegant line of her back, his tongue moving over his lower lip before he said, “I think you’re the sexy one in this relationship, as well as the brains.”
“You know,” Fred teased as she moved her finger down his chest, looking up at him from beneath lowered lids, “I think you’re right.”
Lindsey laughed at her words, pulling her into his arms as he carried her back to the bed, tossing her in the middle before joining her. Soon, soft moans and whimpers joined the sound of the rain falling outside.
